Notebook habits that survive on-call weeks
During drills, we time how long it takes someone unfamiliar with the service to execute a restore from another teammate’s notes. The gap is humbling. Templates beat prose: checkboxes, explicit hostnames, and “expected output” snippets reduce improvisation under stress.
We are not precious about tools. We are picky about redundancy: a PDF export in the runbook repo, plus the live doc link. When authentication schemes change, someone must own updating both.
Backup Planning Studio participants leave with a quarterly calendar invite they cannot dismiss lightly. The invite links to the latest drill log and a two-line summary of what failed last time. Small rituals beat heroic memory.
